The Duty of Care team has been holding events, speaking on panels and hosting webinars across the country to further build the groundswell of support for the Bill.
Monday 23 October 2023: Duty of Care film festival and screening
- Jess from the Duty of Care team spoke on a panel before a screening of a film called ‘Duty of Care: The Climate Trials’ which follows a Dutch lawyer who sued governments and polluting giants in the fight against climate change.
Tuesday 14 November 2023: Parliamentary Group for Future Generations Symposium
- The Duty of Care team was invited to address the Parliamentary Group for Future Generations, co-chaired by Bridget Archer MP, Zaneta Mascarenhas MP and Dr Sophie Scamps MP, on the lobbying day and the campaign so far.
- We spoke about our lobbying efforts and bringing 26 young people from around Australia to Canberra to meet with their MPs and advocate for the Duty of Care bill.
- We heard from Minister for Youth, Anne Aly, about the need to listen to young people in policy formulation, and directly shared with her the youth support for the Duty of Care bill, asking her to listen to young people about this policy and work with us to legislate it.
Monday 5 February 2024: ANU Climate Update
- Hannah represented the Duty of Care team at the ANU Climate Update to open a panel discussion on transforming climate anxiety into action.
- She spoke about the variety of ways that people can get involved in climate activism, from political campaigns to community gardens, and maintaining hope amidst worsening climate change.

Thursday 22 February 2024: Senate Hearing
- Anjali and Hannah gave evidence to the Senate Committee for Environment and Communications on one of the first youth panels to appear in front of a Senate Committee

Saturday 9 March: Paddle out with Sophie Scamps
- Along with Dr Sophie Scamps, the independent MP for Mackellar, the Duty of Care team organised a paddle out for a Duty of Care on Sydney’s northern beaches.
- Together with the local community, we jumped on surfboards and paddled out into Bongin Bongin bay to demonstrate community support for the bill.
Monday 11 March: Webinar with Kate Chaney
- Jess represented the Duty of Care team on a webinar with the independent MP for Curtin, Kate Chaney. Alongside Kate and other climate experts, Jess spoke to the local community about the need for intergenerational climate protections.
Monday 11 March: Launch of the Australian Story
- We were so incredibly lucky to be portrayed on ABC’s Australian Story.
- The episode follows the journey of Anjali’s climate activism and explores the Duty of Care campaign in depth. It premiered on the ABC on Monday 11th March, and since then has been watched more than 10,000 times on Youtube.

Thursday 14 March: Town Hall with Monique Ryan and Zoe Daniel
- Anjali spoke alongside Independent MP for Kooyong, Monique Ryan, and Independent MP for Goldstein, Zoe Daniel, at a town hall for the local community.
- We discussed the need to protect young people in the face of climate change, and listened to the concerns of the local community, who resoundingly supported the Duty of Care bill.
Saturday 17 March: Politics in the Pub with Allegra Spender
- With Independent MP for Wentworth, Allegra Spender, Anjali represented the Duty of Care team on a panel alongside Lottie Dalziel, founder of sustainable company Banish, and Rachel Walmsley, head of policy and law reform at the Environmental Defenders Office.
- We spoke to the local community about a range of measures proposed to mitigate climate change, and received incredible support for the Duty of Care bill.
Sunday 14 April: Rising Tide ‘The First Wave’ film screening event
- Hannah represented the Duty of Care team at the Rising Tide film screening of ‘The First Wave’, a community event that brought together over 200 people from across Canberra to watch a film made about the blockade of the world’s largest coal port in Newcastle in November 2023.
- She spoke about the various ways that the community can take part in the Duty of Care campaign and climate activism more broadly, and encouraged collective action as one way to shift the dial on climate action.
Tuesday 30 April: ANU Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) video
- The Duty of Care team collaborated with ANU ICEDS to interview eminent academics about the need for a Duty of Care Act.
- Academics included IPCC Vice-Chair Professor Mark Howden, ANU College of Law Professor Jolyon Ford, and Professor Sharon Friel, Director of the ANU Planetary Health Equity Hothouse.

Thursday 2 May: Voices for Canberra webinar
- Hannah represented the Duty of Care team to speak to a webinar of 100 people from the Voices for Canberra group about the importance of community-centred politics in ensuring the interests of young people and future generations are protected and strengthened.
Sunday 12 May: Climate Reality Project webinar
- Anjali and Hannah spoke at the ‘Advocacy in Action’ webinar hosted by the Climate Reality Project to discuss the campaign so far and how to make a submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Bill.
- It was fabulous to speak to people from all walks of life about engaging in the political process through submission writing and emailing their MPs for the first time. You can watch the full webinar here.
Tuesday 14 May: Youth Decide Panel for Sydney Climate Action Week
- Hannah spoke on a panel as part of Sydney Climate Action Week about transforming individual actions into system-wide change, using the community advocacy surrounding the Duty of Care bill as one example of building a groundswell of support for political and legislative change.
Saturday 7 June: Australian Human Rights Commission Free+Equal Conference: ‘Children’s Rights are Human Rights’ panel
- Anjali spoke at a panel at the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Free+Equal conference about the rights of children under various international conventions and domestic instruments. She spoke about the need for greater substantive protections of these rights in the face of climate change.
Wednesday 19 June: Voices of Moncrieff Webinar
- As the electorate of Moncrieff aims to elect an independent MP at the upcoming federal election, Anjali spoke to the Voices of Moncrieff group about the Duty of Care campaign and ways they can have their voices heard by their local MP.
Tuesday 25 June: Parliamentary Friends of Future Generations Meeting
- Anjali and Hannah spoke at another meeting of the Parliamentary Friends of Future Generations group about the progress of the Duty of Care bill. In attendance were many of our allies in child rights and environment NGOs, including state and federal Children and Youth commissioners and the co-chairs, Bridget Archer MP, Zaneta Mascarenhas MP and Dr Sophie Scamps MP.
Thursday 27 June: Press conference for the release of the Senate report into the Duty of Care bill
- As the Senate Committee for Environment and Communications released its disheartening report into the Duty of Care bill, the Duty of Care team held a press conference with Independent MPs to call out the government’s failure to embrace their duty to protect current and future generations in the face of climate change.
Tuesday 9 July: Greenpeace documentary launch
- Greenpeace released a documentary about climate litigation around the world that is holding governments to account on climate action. It had a specific focus on the case of Sharma v Environment Minister, for which Anjali was the lead litigant, and the request for an advisory opinion from Vanuatu to the International Court of Justice regarding the obligations of the international community to small island states in the face of climate change.

- Anjali gave a speech at the Dirrum Dirrum festival, organised and hosted by Radford College in the ACT, about the power of young people and why we must take a stake in our future despite the powerful interests against us.
Wednesday 28 August: Mackellar Youth Partnership Program
- Anjali spoke to student leaders in the electorate of Mackellar about her journey into activism and the power of young people.
Tuesday 24 September: Parliamentary Friends of Future Generations Meeting
- Anjali once again updated the Parliamentary Friends group, including many supporters in the climate, environment and human rights space, about where the Duty of Care campaign is up to and steps forward over the next few months.
Monday 30 September: Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN) Briefing
- Anjali and Hannah presented an overview to AEGN on the campaign so far, as well as the need for greater legislative protection for the rights of young people and future generations more broadly. We received strong support for Bill and had several thought-provoking questions from the audience about the approach and strategy of the campaign, as well as the role of philanthropy in supporting climate and environmental campaigns.
